At this point, a universal health care bill of this breadth is entirely aspirational and symbolic given that the GOP controls the house and senate. But it’s still quite remarkable how far single-payer has come in a rather short period. Sure it’s been discussed for decades, but until recently it was seen as a progressive pipe dream that would never appeal to even centrist democrats, let along any republicans.
Our country is still years (possibly decades) away from implementing a systemic overhaul of this magnitude, but it seems we are inching ever closer. As the Pew noted in June, overall public support for a single-payer system has grown.
