The Martian Closing in on Box Office Record

Despite a visible absence of capes and spandex, the new Ridley Scott joint, The Martian seems primed to break the previous record for an October opening ($55.7 million) which was appropriately set by another solitary space drama, Gravity.

The film, which was adapted from the 2011 Andy Weir novel of the same name by Drew Goddard -the man behind some great episodes of Buffy and Lost, as well as the phenomenal 2012 film, The Cabin in the Woods- has been praised by audiences and critics alike.

The Martian is a welcome return to form for Scott, whose last few films have largely been commercial and critical failures.
