The podcast that became a phenomenon in 2014 returns for its second season.
Over 100 million people listened to Sarah Koenig unpack the mysterious circumstances surrounding the murder of Baltimore high school student Have Min Lee, and the subsequent conviction of her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. Regardless of whether or not Syed is innocent or guilty, the overwhelming majority of Serial listeners agreed that he clearly did not receive a fair trial. And the reach of Serial was so vast, that Syed’s motion for his case to be re-opened -16 years after his conviction- was granted last month.
Today Serial returns with its first episode of season two, “Dustwun“. This time around Koenig and co. are focusing on Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the soldier who left his post in Afghanistan, was captured by the Taliban and then released as part of a weighted trade with the U.S. Government. Five prisoners at Guantanamo Bay were released in order to secure the release of Berhdahl, a decision that was highly controversial. Bergdahl was later charged with desertion, but the circumstances surrounding his reasons for leaving his post, and his story as a prisoner of the Taliban has yet to be explored by the media in any real in-depth capacity.
It’s going to be remarkably difficult for Serial to live up to the viral fervor that surrounded its first season, but Koenig and co. -from their days on This American Life onward- have proven well adept at finding and artfully unraveling wildly intriguing, multi-layered stories.
Welcome back Serial.
