The track, which is part of the Adult Swim singles program, and can be downloaded free here, is the duos contribution to the soundtrack of the 70’s NYC crime doc Rubble Kings.
The documentary focuses on the pervasive gang culture that ran New York in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and how hip-hop was born between the chaos as a reflection of the period.
It’s hard to imagine two artists better equipped to handle this particular subject matter than El-P and Killer Mike. Their sound alone feels like old New York infused through a distorted dystopian lens. There’s a refined harshness to Run the Jewels -a pulsating drive that derives from El-P’s production. The snares pound with a palpable grit and always feel like a fresh punch in the face. In other words…THE TRACK IS DOPE.
