When Kanye shared his last single, “Real Friends” he included a preview of his next single, the Madlib produced “No More Parties in LA” Feat. Kendrick Lamar. Two weeks later we have the full track, and it was worth the wait.
After releasing the tedious, grating and surprisingly generic, “FACTS” Kanye has rebounded with two solid tracks in a row. “No More Parties in LA” has Kanye and Kendrick releasing some serious bars on an audience not quite used to verses of this stature. This is lightyears from the typical and safe 16 bar – hook – 16 bar -hook arrangement. Kendrick has around 50 bars and Kanye is closer to 100. After two intro bars (post hook) Kendrick takes the reigns for 1:30 weaving his way through the vibrant and smooth Madlib track. K-Dot’s verse leads right into the simple but effective hook that sets the stage for a three minute Kanye verse. It’s refreshing and unexpected to see Ye reach bad into his repertoire and unleash a high-quality verse of this length.
For underground hip hop heads, Madlib has been a legendary figure for decades, so it’s nice to see him getting some serious commercial love. The catalog he’s built over the last 20 years is hard to rival. And one has to admire the ambition of a 6+ minute hip hop track in the age of the Vine celebrity.
