Governors, which, unlike Coachella is run by a small independent company is asking for fans of the festival to sign a petition for the mayor to reject AEG’s proposal. Producers of Governors Ball, New Founders Entertainment sent an email out explaining their plight thusly,
“As a small, independent company in an industry dominated by major corporations and rapid consolidation, we’ve come a long way and given hundreds of thousands of you first class entertainment. Sadly, today our future is in jeopardy and we need your help.
It’s a classic David vs. Goliath scenario, AEG is a large, powerful corporation with an immense amount of influence and capital at its disposal. And New Founders Entertainment is a small business that has built up Governors Ball, piece by piece, over the past five years. Due to AEG’s curious decision to place their new proposed festival a mere two weeks after Governors Ball, it would make New Founders ability to book acts and compete with AEG remarkably difficult if not impossible.
The letter continues,
“The timing of this proposed event is an aggressive, greedy attempt by AEG to push a small independent company of born and bred New Yorkers out of business and out of the market.
We are writing you today to ask for your support and tell the Mayor’s Office and the City of New York to reject this proposed event that would take place two weeks after Gov Ball. We are asking that this proposed event take place at another time of year because this would allow both events to succeed. Please help Gov Ball survive and continue to serve you – the fans, friends, and family – for many years to come!”
Governors Ball has grown into a great festival over the last few years -it would be a shame to see it be unceremoniously squashed under the corporate boot.
